Tips for a Strong Award Application
Successful programs address the needs of their school community. Consider
using an assessment tool to assess the healthy eating practices in your school
and to develop plans and goals for the future. This is a great way to get
others involved in your program and to create sustainability.
The following tips will help you highlight your nutrition initiatives and
the difference they have made in your school when filling out the award application.
Description of the Project:
Use as much detail as possible and
tell us everything you can about the innovative changes you have made in
your school to give us the best picture of what is happening.
Use strong verbs when describing how the changes were
implemented in your school (ie. The committee collected all the
school project data. vs. The committee was responsible for collecting all
the data for the school project.)
Highlight everyone involved in your initiative and what
role they played.
Describe nutrition education in your school. Are
you using any special programs to teach nutrition? Is peer teaching occurring?
Are you making links to other subject areas? Consider in class and whole
school contexts.
Discuss what you based your changes on. If you are following Canada’s Food Guide, using the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines
for Children and Youth or using your School District’s Nutrition Policy,
mention it in your application.
Results:
Evaluate the results of your program. What is different
since you began your initiative? Create a survey, track sales, or find
another measure of change that works for you.
Assessment tools may also be helpful in evaluation.
Evaluating your programs can help guide their direction in the future (ie.
HATS, JCSH).
Behaviour change is the not the same as increased awareness.
What specific differences do you see in students and staff as a result
of the changes you made?
Future Plans:
Sustainability is important. Sustainable programs can
be continued in the future without draining all of your resources and typically
involve a variety of people that offer support. Consider how your program
can be sustained long-term.
